Fusion is the implantation of a bone graft that will fuse (grow together) with vertebrae (bones of the spine) in the area with implantation of screws and plates. The damaged disc(s) and any bone spurs are removed reducing the pressure from the spinal cord or nerve roots.<\/li><li>Next, a very thin titanium plate and screws is used to\u00a0<em>fix<\/em>\u00a0the bones (hold them in place). The implantation of titanium hardware (the\u00a0<em>fixation<\/em>) provides spinal stability as the cage\u00a0<em>fuses<\/em>\u00a0(grows together) with the adjacent bones.
